Passage: 1 Timothy 5
The Big Idea
In 1 Timothy 5, Paul shows how the church cares for its own family: how we treat each other, how we care for widows, and how we honor leaders. Underneath it all is a beautiful freedom. Because Jesus is our defender, we don’t have to defend our reputations.
Where We Are in 1 Timothy
- Chapter 1: The church and its message
- Chapters 2-3: The church and its members
- Chapter 4: The church and its minister
- Chapter 5: The church and its ministry to itself
- Chapter 6: The church and its ministry to the world
Chapter 5 covers three groups: the family, widows and elders.
Treat Each Other as Family (1 Timothy 5:1-2)
Don’t harshly rebuke an older man; appeal to him as a father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with all purity.
Young men are zealous and often think they have all the answers. Paul says honor the older generation. There is deep water in their words (Proverbs 18:4).
With all purity. Paul tells Timothy to flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness with a pure heart (2 Timothy 2:22), and to be an example in purity (1 Timothy 4:12). A simple tip: if you want a prayer partner, young men pray with young men. “We’re just praying together” has started a lot of trouble.
Caring for Widows (1 Timothy 5:3-16)
This was long before any social safety net. Widows had to be provided for.
Families first
If a widow has children or grandchildren, they are the first to care for her (1 Timothy 5:4, 8). Don’t shove that responsibility off on the church. Caring for your own is part of living out the faith.
The same principle applies to our kids. Passing on faith starts at home. The church gets to help, but parents get to lead.
The real widow
A widow who is truly alone trusts in God and continues in prayer night and day (1 Timothy 5:5). When she can’t sleep, she prays. These women were devoted to the things of the kingdom.
Living for pleasure
But the one who lives for pleasure is dead while she lives (1 Timothy 5:6). Think of the grandma whose whole retirement is the casino buffet and the slot machines.
What does God take pleasure in? Not wickedness (Psalm 5:4), but in those who hope in His mercy (Psalm 147:11).
What happens when we live for pleasure? Read Ecclesiastes 2. Solomon tried it all and found it empty. The pleasures of life can choke out fruit (Luke 8:14). We were all once slaves to various lusts and pleasures (Titus 3:3). Moses chose to suffer with God’s people rather than enjoy sin’s passing pleasures (Hebrews 11:25).
But in relationship with Jesus there is fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11). God is not against pleasure. He is the source of the real thing.
Honoring Elders (1 Timothy 5:17-25)
- Pay them. Those who lead well and labor in the Word are worthy of double honor (1 Timothy 5:17-18).
- Protect them. The enemy wants to destroy churches by attacking leaders. Don’t receive an accusation without two or three witnesses (1 Timothy 5:19). Otherwise it’s just gossip.
- Don’t rush. Don’t lay hands on anyone hastily (1 Timothy 5:22). A new believer shouldn’t be put in leadership too quickly, or pride can trip him up (1 Timothy 3:6).
Freedom from Defending Yourself
How do you feel when you read the last verses of this chapter? Some sins are obvious; others come out later. Some good works are obvious; others are hidden for now but can’t stay hidden (1 Timothy 5:24-25).
Do you feel the need to defend yourself? That’s a big deal. As Christians, we don’t have to. Satan accuses. Jesus defends (Romans 8:33-34; 1 John 2:1).
That doesn’t mean we never mess up. It means we don’t have to save face. We can just be honest.
Paul said if he were still trying to please people, he wouldn’t be a servant of Christ (Galatians 1:10). And Jesus Himself made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant (Philippians 2:5-7).
Can you hide what you are? Yes and no. Can you change what you are? Yes and no. But Jesus can, and He has given you a new identity that doesn’t need your protection.
Grace Takeaway
Treat God’s people as family, care for those who are alone, honor those who lead, and let go of managing your image. Your reputation is safe in the hands of the One who made Himself of no reputation for you.
