Passage: Psalm 101
The Big Idea
In Psalm 101, David resolves to lead his house and his kingdom with integrity: a perfect heart at home, nothing wicked before his eyes, no slanderers or liars in his presence. It’s a king’s pledge, and only one King has ever kept it perfectly. It begins with the gospel in four words: mercy and justice. At the cross, both are fully satisfied.
Reflections
I will sing of mercy and justice; to You, O Lord, I will sing praises (v. 1). You’re the source of all mercy. I don’t get what I deserve; I get love when I should be judged. And I can sing of justice, too: I’m justified through Jesus’ blood, legally declared innocent by God the Judge. You were just to do it, because the punishment was carried out on Your beloved Son.
I will behave wisely in a perfect way. Oh, when will You come to me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart (v. 2). Works follow relationship, and works show the relationship is real. You deserve service from the heart as well as outward action. It’s all for You and because of You.
I will set nothing wicked before my eyes (v. 3). I take this as guidance for me: seek only what’s holy. The world chases riches, power and success through the flesh. I want Your will. Open my ears and guide me by Your Spirit. Provide the resources to build a team for Your kingdom work: prayer, service, worship and outreach.
A perverse heart shall depart from me (v. 4). This is perfectly true of Jesus. Truth is always in Him.
The one who has a haughty look and a proud heart, him I will not endure (v. 5). Pride is the worst; it leads to destruction. Give me a humble heart. Answer my prayers because of Your greatness, not mine.
My eyes shall be on the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me (v. 6). You care for those who trust You. You served me first, and I want to serve You in return. You’re the Initiator, and I love You for it. I’ve been slow and stubborn. Draw near to me.
He who works deceit shall not dwell within my house (v. 7). I’ve been deceitful. I’ve lied. I don’t deserve to dwell with You. Yet Your blood is sufficient. You forgive me and don’t hold my sin against me. I depend wholly on Your grace.
Early I will destroy all the wicked of the land (v. 8). It would be right to destroy sinners. Yet You offer mercy because You love them. You’re the Judge who takes the blame Yourself.
Grace Takeaway
Only Jesus has walked with a perfect heart. Because He did, and because He bore the justice we deserved, you can sing of mercy and justice together. Your house can be His house, not by your record, but by His blood.
