Passage: Psalm 16
The Big Idea
“You are my Lord; I have no good apart from You.” Psalm 16 is a song of contentment in God alone: my portion, my cup, my inheritance. Peter and Paul both tell us it’s ultimately about Jesus, who trusted the Father through death and was not abandoned to the grave (Acts 2:25-31). In Him, God has shown us the path of life, and in His presence is fullness of joy.
Reflections
Preserve me, O God (v. 1). Humility asks for help. Faith sees God as the answer, the safe place. My heart rests in His steady love.
I have no good apart from You (v. 2). Preach the gospel to yourself. Convince your heart that there’s no good apart from God. It takes time for the gospel to fill every corner of the heart.
The saints, in whom is all my delight (v. 3). Unity with other believers is the natural response of a Spirit-filled heart. It isn’t hard or strange. It’s natural.
Their sorrows shall be multiplied (v. 4). Want sorrow? Chase another god. Want joy? Wait on God and abide in Jesus. There are other things to trust, but I won’t even consider any object of faith but Jesus. I’ll be stubborn about it.
You are my portion and my cup (v. 5). I don’t need to earn a good ending. It’s a gift, according to the riches of His grace. God is my promised future, and also my cup today. What I drink in now is the very life of Jesus. You maintain my lot: that word leads me to grace alone, a gift.
The lines have fallen in pleasant places (v. 6). My life is a work of Your blessing and mercy. You’re so kind to me. That’s the life of faith: believing this even when circumstances don’t look good.
The Lord who has given me counsel (v. 7). God counsels from the inside out, even in the night, and it leads to a blessed relationship.
I have set the Lord always before me (v. 8). My relationship with God comes first, always. Eyes of faith are the first priority, and circumstances never change them. Stability is faith’s reward: I shall not be moved.
My heart is glad (v. 9). My joy comes from within. I don’t have to struggle in the flesh to get this joy and rest.
You will not leave my soul in Sheol (v. 10). Jesus! This is the promise He clung to. He lived and died by faith. Outwardly it looked like death, but He kept trusting His Father, and the result was life.
You will show me the path of life (v. 11). God isn’t hiding the path of life. He reveals it in Jesus, who is the way (John 14:6). Abiding with God through Jesus is the most joyful experience possible, and it can’t fade. Jesus is a never-ending spring of joy: in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Grace Takeaway
Set the Lord before you today. He’s your portion and your cup, and in Jesus He has already shown you the path of life. Walk it with joy.
