Psalm 18: The Lord Is My Strength

Passage: Psalm 18

The Big Idea

David sang this song when God delivered him from all his enemies and from Saul. It’s a celebration of God’s strength given to the weak: He is rock, fortress, deliverer, shield and horn of salvation. God came down in power to rescue one man, because He delighted in him. In Christ, we’re treated as Jesus, and His perfect way of grace takes our weakness and makes it strength.

Reflections

I will love You, O Lord, my strength (vv. 1-3). God is my strength. That’s grace’s first truth: I’m weak, but He’s strong. Remembering it changes my heart. I see His willingness to strengthen me, and I love Him.

  • My rock: the storm won’t destroy me.
  • My fortress: the enemy won’t kill me.
  • My deliverer: my own sin won’t destroy me.
  • My shield: the enemy’s blows are blocked.
  • The horn of my salvation: strength and victory. Jesus was strong enough to stay on the cross and accomplish my salvation.

My response: You are my God. I will trust in You. In any need I’ll call on You, and while I wait, I’ll praise You.

The pangs of death surrounded me (vv. 4-6). Death hurts, whether it’s physical danger or dying to self. People’s choices can frighten me, and I’m not immune to pain. But in every distress I’ll call on the Lord, and I know He hears me from His temple.

The earth shook (vv. 7-15). What can stop You when You act? Nothing. The whole earth trembles. Your heart is truly moved by my suffering. You came down from heaven in compassion, with darkness, thunder, lightning and fire. The sea and the earth can’t stand before You. And at the cross, You endured three hours of darkness so I’d never have to be without light.

He drew me out of many waters (vv. 16-19). With all this power, You gently lift me out of my mess! My weakness is no trouble for You, and neither is my enemies’ strength. He delivered me because He delighted in me. Because You delight in me, I delight in You.

According to my righteousness (vv. 20-24). I don’t deserve it, yet You’ve treated me as You treat Jesus. He alone kept every command and lived perfectly by Your Word. In Him I’m counted righteous.

With the merciful You show Yourself merciful (vv. 25-27). God sees the heart and won’t be outdone in mercy. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). Mercy, blamelessness and purity are matters of the heart.

You will light my lamp (v. 28). I start in darkness every time. But You light my lamp. You take the initiative; it’s Your oil and Your fire.

By You I can run against a troop (v. 29). If You give me light and life, You’ll also give me strength. Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 2:1). No army, no wall, no limit can stand against His power. I won’t trust in the arm of flesh.

As for God, His way is perfect (vv. 30-31). The way of grace, humility and faith, is perfect. It works, without flaw. It takes my weakness and makes it strength. Time after time Scripture proves it: pride is brought low, and humility is met with heaven’s resources. Who is God except the Lord? Who is a rock, except our God?

He makes my way perfect (vv. 32-36). He’s willing to be my power. Do I want to accept it? There are no mistakes and no unexpected bumps from His perspective. My life is what He planned, not for my destruction but for my good. I can trust my Father. He makes my feet like the feet of deer: sure-footed where He places me. Your gentleness has made me great: He tends me like a shepherd.

I have pursued my enemies (vv. 37-45). Not defensive, but victorious. If these enemies picture the flesh, His Spirit will fight until it rises no more. Strength and victory come from God, and so does fruitful ministry. It’s given, not earned.

The Lord lives! (vv. 46-50). You live, and You’re the source of all life. You’re my rock and Savior, and You should be my focus every moment. I don’t need to avenge myself; You tell me to be still. I’ll stand with You and behind You, and I want You to get all the glory, even in this trial. Jesus, You’re the Son of David. You know what it means to live in the Father’s grace. I want to live like You, with You, through You and for You.

Grace Takeaway

You don’t need to be strong. You need the Lord, who is your strength. Call on Him in your distress. He delights in you, and He will draw you out of deep waters.
