Psalm 26: I Will Go About Your Altar

Passage: Psalm 26

The Big Idea

David asks God to examine him and vindicate him. That may sound self-righteous, but read through the gospel, his integrity rests on God’s lovingkindness and truth: grace and truth, which came through Jesus. He washes his hands and walks around God’s altar, loving the place where God’s glory dwells.

Reflections

Vindicate me, O Lord (v. 1). I can picture Jesus praying this. I’ve prayed it in seasons of unfair suffering. Trusting the Lord often means going through suffering I don’t deserve. But I’ll trust Him; there’s no other option. I have trusted in the Lord; I shall not slip.

Examine me, O Lord, and prove me (v. 2). Your sanctifying work in me matters more than being proven right. Show me what You’re doing and what I need to cry out for. I need You to see what I can’t.

Your lovingkindness is before my eyes, and I have walked in Your truth (v. 3). Lovingkindness is grace. Jesus came full of grace and truth (John 1:14). So I keep His grace before my eyes and walk in His truth. Relationship with Jesus has been, and will be, my whole life.

I have not sat with idolatrous mortals (vv. 4-5). My deepest fellowship is reserved for Jesus alone, like the faithfulness of a marriage.

I will wash my hands in innocence; so I will go about Your altar (vv. 6-7). Washing my hands means abiding in Your Word; time in Your Word cleanses what I do. Then I spend time at Your altar, the place where Your sacrifice is always sufficient. Abiding in Your Word leads me to abide in Your sacrifice. Everything I need comes through that door. Then I can truly give thanks and tell of Your wondrous works.

I have loved the habitation of Your house (v. 8). Living in Your house is the best thing ever. Your glory is near and accessible.

Do not gather my soul with sinners (vv. 9-10). My soul belongs with You alone. You’re my spiritual life.

Redeem me and be merciful to me (vv. 11-12). You’re my righteousness and integrity, and Your redemption and mercy are my constant needs. My foot stands in an even place: steady and secure, equipped to serve God’s people around me.

Grace Takeaway

Your integrity before God doesn’t rest on your record but on His grace and truth. Wash in His Word, linger at His altar, and love the place where His glory dwells.
