Psalm 35: I Am Your Salvation

Passage: Psalm 35

The Big Idea

David is falsely accused and repaid evil for good. He’s tempted to defend himself, but instead he asks God to fight for him and to say to his soul, “I am your salvation.” The psalm is honest about the pain of unjust treatment, and it ends with praise for God’s righteousness, not his own.

Reflections

Plead my cause, O Lord (vv. 1-3). I don’t need to defend myself. I can trust You, learn humility and stop worrying about what people think. I can’t beat them anyway. Say to my soul, “I am your salvation.” Convince me that You alone are my salvation. I can’t save myself.

Let them be confounded (vv. 4-8). I can believe my life has real value to You, that You’ll defend me and fight for me. I can’t give myself that honor. Even if people are set on my destruction, I don’t need to worry. Without God’s protection, their plans will turn on them. I have God. Help me trust.

My soul shall be joyful in the Lord (vv. 9-10). You’ll be my only joy. From my very bones I’ll declare that You’re all-powerful and all-loving. Lord, who is like You, delivering the poor? You look on the humble and deliver the broken.

False witnesses rise up (vv. 11-16). My own conscience is the harshest accuser I’ve ever heard, and I don’t know how to answer. Teach me to humble myself and ask for help. It hurts when doing good is repaid with evil. If I’m honest, I feel I deserve better, that I’ve earned better. I’ve done good with my whole heart, and still the bad spreads like wildfire. I can’t fix it. I need You to rescue me, and I repent of trying to do it myself.

Lord, how long will You look on? (vv. 17-18). I’ll stop trying to fix it and turn to You with thanks and praise. I’ll bring You my complaint instead of my works.

You have seen, O Lord; do not keep silence (vv. 19-23). The attacks are false and undeserved. But You see everything. I’ll trust You alone. Your nearness is my only comfort. I’ll wait for You to act.

Vindicate me according to Your righteousness (vv. 24-26). Not according to my righteousness! Let’s do this Your way, because of what Jesus has done, for His sake. The enemy wants to destroy me; You want to deliver me. Keep me close. I’ll leave the outcome with You.

Let the Lord be magnified (v. 27). I’m on Your side. Lord, I love You, and Your children rejoice with me. Help me love my brothers and sisters. We all want to see You magnified, bigger in our view.

My tongue shall speak of Your righteousness (v. 28). Not my own. Only Yours. Only Your praise, all day long.

Grace Takeaway

When you’re misunderstood or mistreated, you don’t have to defend yourself. Ask Him to say to your soul, “I am your salvation,” and let Him be your advocate.
