Psalm 38: Lord, All My Desire Is Before You

Passage: Psalm 38

The Big Idea

Psalm 38 is a raw prayer of someone crushed under the weight of his own sin: body aching, heart pounding, friends standing at a distance. There’s no pretending here, only honest confession and desperate dependence. And that’s exactly the posture grace meets: Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation.

Reflections

Do not rebuke me in Your wrath (vv. 1-2). I couldn’t bear Your anger directed at me. I delight in Your love and grace, which I can’t earn. Yet I need Your correction. It proves You care. You’re involved in my life and won’t let me keep going down destructive paths. Your hand is the only one that loves me enough to discipline me rightly.

There is no soundness in my flesh because of my sin (vv. 3-8). When I resist the Spirit’s work, my whole body feels it. I feel dry and sick. My iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. My sin is more than I can carry. I come to You to carry it for me; I can’t pay what’s needed. Anyone else would be repulsed by my sin, but You love me. Sin stresses me and drags me down. It touches even my most tender places. I’m weak, broken, my heart in turmoil.

Lord, all my desire is before You (vv. 9-10). You see it all. You feel it all. You know my sorrow, even the self-caused parts, and You still love me. My heart is dry and needs living water. My strength is gone, and I can’t fix anything. I’m at the end of myself, done with the self-life.

My loved ones and my friends stand aloof (vv. 11-14). No person can meet my deepest needs. Only You. My flesh and my enemies are against me. I should know better by now, but I’m spiritually helpless, deaf and mute. I’m dead inside.

For in You, O Lord, I hope (vv. 15-16). But that’s what makes me able to trust You. You hear my broken, dead cries. I have nothing to offer but trust. You will hear, O Lord my God. I’d rather You save me and get the glory than let my enemies destroy me.

I am ready to fall (vv. 17-18). I’m humble now. I can’t save myself. I will declare my iniquity; I will be in anguish over my sin. Humility is the key to a real relationship with God.

My enemies are vigorous (vv. 19-20). There are real enemies who really hate me, and I can’t defeat them. Even when we try to do good, the enemy attacks God’s people.

Do not forsake me, O Lord (vv. 21-22). In every attack, I can only draw near to You and put my hope in You. I’ll keep asking until You answer, with confidence, hope and urgency: Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!

Grace Takeaway

If you’re crushed under the weight of your sin today, don’t hide it and don’t try to fix it. Lay all your desire before Him. He hears the broken, and He is your salvation.
