Psalm 43: Send Out Your Light and Your Truth

Passage: Psalm 43

The Big Idea

Psalm 43 completes Psalm 42. The psalmist asks God for vindication and then for guidance: send out Your light and truth to lead me to Your presence. There, at God’s altar, God becomes his exceeding joy, and the refrain returns: hope in God.

Reflections

Vindicate me, O God (v. 1). If You declare it, it’s true. I don’t need anyone else to step in. My flesh is against me, and the enemy attacks my soul. I need Your grace to rescue me. I’ll wait for You alone.

Why do You cast me off? (v. 2). Seasons of waiting through trials test my faith. Faith is the unwavering hope that You love me and are in control. My flesh suggests You’ve tossed me aside, that You don’t see my enemies or care about my loneliness.

Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me (v. 3). In prayer I ask for light and truth. Jesus is the light of my life (John 8:12), and Jesus is the truth (John 14:6). Let Him be my guide and Counselor. He’ll lead me to where You dwell. Your presence is all I need. Help me remember.

Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy (v. 4). In Your presence I commune with You. I delight in the Sacrifice offered for my sin. I praise You with a song that bursts from my heart. I sense our oneness and fellowship. I’m truly satisfied in God alone. Nothing else will do.

Why are you cast down, O my soul? (v. 5). In Your presence I can see clearly enough to question my feelings, and tell my soul to line up with the truth. By the Spirit I hope in God alone and praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.

Grace Takeaway

You don’t need more answers; you need His light and truth, and they have a name: Jesus. Let Him lead you to the altar, where God becomes your exceeding joy.
