Psalm 56: You Number My Wanderings

Passage: Psalm 56

The Big Idea

David wrote this when the Philistines seized him in Gath (1 Samuel 21). Surrounded by people twisting his words, he makes a simple decision: Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. And he finds astonishing comfort: God counts his wanderings and keeps his tears in a bottle, recorded in His book.

Reflections

Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up (vv. 1-2). Control is an illusion for me; You’re the one in control. I can pour out my heart and call on Your mercy. I feel no relief from the pressure. Lord, I’ll trust You more and surrender more. Even when I feel I’ve failed the people I love most, You’re Most High, and You’re with me all day.

Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You (vv. 3-4). So many things frighten me, perhaps none more than the thought that someone I love might never know Your mercy. Fear is the opposite of faith. I’ll still feel afraid sometimes, but every fear is a new chance to trust You. Why fear when You love me and care for my whole life? You love the people I love more than I do, and You intercede for them while I sleep (Hebrews 7:25). In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me? Jesus, You’re the Word, and I’ll praise You every moment. What You did for me on the cross is beyond calculation. I need Your Spirit to strengthen every part of me and live through me completely.

All day they twist my words (vv. 5-7). How can I stand against such evil? Only by Your strength. The enemy accuses through other people’s minds. I don’t have the wisdom or strength to protect myself. I’ll love my family and my church and let You defend. You’ve loved me since before the world began, and You won’t let Your child be harmed without answering.

You number my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle; are they not in Your book? (v. 8). How wonderfully You care for me! You count my steps. You know everything I’ve been through. You don’t just know my tears; You keep them. It’s Your book, and You’re writing my story. If tears are part of a good story, I’ll let You use them. Let them be a sweet offering to You. I may not know how this turns out, but I’ll know You.

When I cry out to You, then my enemies will turn back; this I know, because God is for me (v. 9). What confidence! You’ve never left me alone. You’ve listened and answered daily. My job is to cry out to You and no one else. God is for me! I don’t deserve that. I’m a sinner like everyone else, yet Jesus, You searched for me, pulled me out of the mud and chose me.

In God (I will praise His word), in the Lord (I will praise His word) (vv. 10-11). There’s nothing but You, Lord. I’ll live for Your glory, delight in Your Word, and let what Jesus has done be my life every moment. You’re my Bridegroom, and my heart sings to You. What can man do to me? Turn back every lie and deception.

Vows made to You are binding upon me (vv. 12-13). Not binding like the law, but like cords of love. I love to give You everything. You have delivered my soul from death… that I may walk before God in the light of the living. Every good step I’ve taken is because Your hand was with me. Now do the same for those I love: shine Your light into their lives.

Grace Takeaway

Whenever you’re afraid, trust Him. He’s counting your steps and keeping your tears. Not one is wasted, because God is for you.
