Psalm 66: Through Fire and Through Water

Passage: Psalm 66

The Big Idea

Psalm 66 calls the whole earth to praise God for His awesome works: He turned the sea into dry land. Then it gets personal: God tested His people, refining them like silver, bringing them through fire and water, and out into a place of abundance. Blessed be God, who has not turned away my prayer, nor His mercy from me!

Reflections

Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth! (vv. 1-2). I want to praise You, but my heart is heavy. Teach me to rejoice in You even when I don’t feel like it. You’re glorious. I remember Your love and sacrifice for me.

How awesome are Your works! (vv. 3-4). Through Your great power, Your enemies submit. Use that power today. Bring everything under Your will. I can’t carry this burden; I give it to You and trust Your power and Your willingness to help. All the earth shall worship You: let me see that in my own home today.

Come and see the works of God (vv. 5-7). You’ve proven faithful again and again, yet I still need You today. He turned the sea into dry land. Sometimes it feels like an ocean between people who should be close. Jesus, do it again. Do not let the rebellious exalt themselves. Break down pride. Humble us. If something in me needs to be sacrificed, do it.

Oh, bless our God (vv. 8-9). I’ll sing even with a broken heart and praise You even when it hurts. He keeps our soul among the living, and does not allow our feet to be moved. You’re standing right with me. Your mercies are new every morning. Hold me up. I can’t bear this any longer by myself.

You have refined us as silver is refined (v. 10). This is the furnace I’m in. I trust You’re in control no matter what I feel. I surrender. You’re refining me. The heat is intense. Have mercy.

You brought us into the net; You laid affliction on our backs (vv. 11-12). You’re my good Shepherd, and I trust You even through this. We went through fire and through water. It feels like refining fire and drowning water at once. I’ll stop struggling and just trust You with all my heart. But You brought us out to rich fulfillment.

I will go into Your house… I will pay You my vows (vv. 13-15). The people I love need my love and leadership, but I have nothing on my own. Fill me with Your Spirit and Your sacrificial love. I’ve failed You countless times. Have mercy; I repent. I want You more than anything. Everything I am and have is Yours.

Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul (v. 16). If it’s Your will, give me a testimony to share.

I cried to Him with my mouth (v. 17). When the enemy tempts me to doubt, I’ll keep praising.

If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear (v. 18). Search my heart. I’m trusting You, and I know I’m a sinner at the same time. Thank You for the furnace that removes the dross. I needed it. And have mercy.

But certainly God has heard me (vv. 19-20). I want to see the proof. Answer me quickly; I need peace, power and love. Blessed be God, who has not turned away my prayer, nor His mercy from me! I can say it by faith and believe it. You haven’t turned me away. Send mercy, send grace, bring reconciliation, and show me what to do today.

Grace Takeaway

If you’re in the fire or the flood right now, you’re not abandoned; you’re being refined. He brings His people through, and out to a place of abundance. He has not turned away your prayer.
