Psalm 75: God Is the Judge

Passage: Psalm 75

The Big Idea

Psalm 75 opens with thanks, because God’s name is near. Then God Himself speaks: at the time He chooses, He will judge rightly. Promotion doesn’t come from the east or the west; God puts down one and exalts another. In His hand is a cup of wrath that the wicked will drink to the dregs. But the psalmist will sing forever, because the horns of the proud will be cut off and the righteous lifted up.

Reflections

We give thanks to You, O God… for Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near (v. 1). You’re not a faraway God. You’re near. Your works show me You hear me. Make it even clearer. I’ll give thanks forever. Take my burden.

When I choose the proper time, I will judge uprightly (v. 2). It’s Your timing, not mine.

The earth and all its inhabitants are dissolved; I set up its pillars firmly (v. 3). It’ll all end the way You say. Keep my life focused on eternity.

I said to the boastful, “Do not deal boastfully,” and to the wicked, “Do not lift up the horn” (vv. 4-5). Pride and self-strength stand against grace. How many times have I lifted my horn and spoken with a stiff neck? Too many. Yet You’ve had mercy on me. I have no strength; You’re my only hope. Make the next generation humble and full of faith.

For exaltation comes neither from the east nor from the west nor from the south. But God is the judge: He puts down one, and exalts another (vv. 6-7). Moving somewhere new isn’t the path to doing better. I live before You alone. If You’re training me to trust You more, I’ll learn to trust You more. If You want me to do something else, Your living water will flow through me to do it. I don’t need to figure out the plan. I just need to abide close to You and let my cup be filled.

In the hand of the Lord there is a cup… all the wicked of the earth shall drain and drink down (v. 8). And Jesus, You drank that cup for me. I deserved it. I’ve been wicked and selfish, yet You loved me while I was weak and sinning.

But I will declare forever, I will sing praises to the God of Jacob (v. 9). You deserve every breath I have. Every lungful of grace, I breathe back to You in praise.

All the horns of the wicked I will cut off, but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted (v. 10). Humility and pride will be the measure. I choose humility. I’m a little scared to say it, but please help me be small in my own sight. I just want to exalt You and be a light shining in Your direction, so the world can know Your name: Jesus the merciful, Jesus the gracious, the Way, the Life, the Shepherd, the Messiah. The name above every name, at which every knee will bow.

Grace Takeaway

Promotion comes from God, not from striving. Jesus drank the cup of wrath we deserved, so the proud can be humbled and the humble lifted up by grace. Let Him decide when and how to raise you, and spend your breath praising Him.
