Psalm 8: How Majestic Is Your Name

Passage: Psalm 8

The Big Idea

God’s majesty fills the whole earth and heavens. And this great God delights in weakness: He builds strength out of the mouths of babies, and He stoops to care for frail human beings. We’re the crown of His creation, made to live in humble dependence on Him, and everything works as it should when it’s under His rule.

Reflections

How majestic is Your name in all the earth (v. 1). There’s no place on earth, or anywhere in the universe, where God isn’t King and final authority.

Out of the mouth of babes (v. 2). You delight in weakness. You love to take a humble person and make them strong; it fits Your character and brings You glory. The enemy wants to crush the weak with the strong, but You won’t let him. Jesus quoted this when children praised Him in the temple (Matthew 21:16).

What is man, that You are mindful of him? (vv. 3-4). You’re so strong and glorious. Why would You care about weak, humble people? Wouldn’t You prefer the strong? No. You dwell with the humble and contrite (Isaiah 57:15).

A little lower than the angels (v. 5). We’re the high point of Your physical creation, yet we were made to live in humble dependence on You. Hebrews 2:6-9 shows this fulfilled in Jesus, who was made lower for a little while and is now crowned with glory and honor.

Dominion over the works of Your hands (vv. 6-8). When we live in fellowship with You, we’ll do all You’ve planned for us. The whole world works as it should when it’s submitted to You, displaying Your perfect planning, provision, mercy and grace.

O Lord, our Lord (v. 9). The psalm ends where it began: with His majestic name.

Grace Takeaway

You don’t need to be strong to be useful to God. He’s mindful of you, and He loves to show His strength through the weak. Live today in humble dependence on the majestic One who cares for you.
