Psalm 84: How Lovely Is Your Tabernacle

Passage: Psalm 84

The Big Idea

Psalm 84 is a pilgrim’s love song for God’s house. His whole being longs for the living God. Even sparrows find a home near His altars. Those whose strength is in God go through the Valley of Weeping and turn it into springs, going from strength to strength. A day in Your courts is better than a thousand. And the promise: The Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.

Reflections

How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of hosts! (v. 1). You choose to dwell with us, though You don’t need us. Your heavenly dwelling is better than I can imagine: not boring, not frightening, never ending, never bad. Just lovely, because You are love. It honors the sacrifice of love You provided. The angels serve You and praise You. Why can’t I be that consistent?

My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God (v. 2). My whole being longs for my Creator. You planted that need deep in me. When I sin, I know I’m hurting our relationship. I’m sorry. My nature is weak, proud and fearful. Forgive me and change me. You’re the living God; You feel, love and live. Forgive me for acting like You don’t.

Even the sparrow has found a home… even Your altars (v. 3). The smallest, most insignificant birds are safe and at home with You. So am I. Their home is the altar, and so is mine. I’m only clean because of what Jesus has done. His blood washes away my sin.

Blessed are those who dwell in Your house; they will still be praising You (v. 4). How happy I am when I abide in Your house. Your church, all who are born again, is that house on earth. My life should be praise every moment, but I’m often self-centered. Work deep in my heart. I’m sorry for running away so many times.

Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, whose heart is set on pilgrimage (v. 5). I need my heart set on the journey, as a traveler. I need to be strong in You, not in me. I need to die to my own strength. I’ll pray, confess and abide.

As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a spring (v. 6). Fellowship with You may lead me through times of weeping. But as I go through them, Your living water appears, falling like rain. Tears can be good for the soul. They come as I see my need for You.

They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion (v. 7). Through all the trials, You’re working in me. My job is to stay close and appear before You daily, waiting for Your Spirit to strengthen me.

O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob (v. 8). I’ll keep knocking, seeking and pressing in. I’ve been Jacob for years, running from You and doing things my way. Wrestle with me.

O God, behold our shield, and look upon the face of Your anointed (v. 9). If You looked at me and saw only my sin, I’d be rejected. But I have a Shield, a Savior. Jesus is perfect: His face is pure, His works true, His obedience complete. When You look at me, You see Him, and You treat me as if all that were true of me.

For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness (v. 10). There’s a part of me that still longs for those tents. I’ve stood outside watching and wished I were doing what they do. I’m guilty of the same desires. Forgive me and make me single-hearted.

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory (v. 11). The sun gives life, yet its full glory would destroy me. And You’re also my shield, as in verse 9: Jesus. You protect me in my weakness. You freely give grace, and grace is all I’ll ever need. Glory is Yours alone, yet You share it with me. No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly. Help me walk uprightly and be fully engaged in Your kingdom.

O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in You! (v. 12). I confess my weakness. Sometimes I wonder if my “trust” is really fear dressed up: stepping back from responsibility because of past hurts, convinced I’m not the hero. Show me what’s real. It is right and blessed to trust You. Show me whether I’m doing it rightly. Old pain makes me recoil; heal my soul and help me see Your love. Lead my mind, will and actions today.

Grace Takeaway

Your access to God’s house doesn’t rest on your record. It rests on His Anointed, Jesus, your Shield. Because God looks on His face, you can make your home at the altar like a sparrow, walk through the valley of tears and find springs, and expect Him to give grace and glory.
