Passage: Isaiah 49:14-16
The Big Idea
“The Lord has forgotten me.” Maybe you’ve felt that, especially when you’re hurting or when prayer seems silent. Israel said exactly that, and God answered with one of the most tender promises in Scripture: a nursing mother might forget her child, but I will never forget you. I have engraved you on the palms of My hands. In Jesus we see those hands, pierced for us. He can’t forget you, because every time He looks at His hands, He sees the price He paid for you.
“The Lord Has Forgotten Me”
Maybe you’ve thought it:
The Lord has forgotten about me. Why would all these things happen to me if He really loved me? I must not be important to God.
Why is it so silent when I pray? Other people seem to hear His voice and have a real connection with Him. Why can’t I?
I wasn’t worried about Him forgetting me before. But now I need Him. Now I’m hurting, desperate, afraid of a situation I can’t control. I’m turning to Him. I’ve heard that He loves me, that He cares. But I’m most afraid that He’s forgotten me. That I’ve been left behind. Missed the boat. Too late. I spent too long in sin, and now He’s given up on me.
Zion’s Complaint (Isaiah 49:14)
Yet Zion complained that the LORD had abandoned her and forgotten her.
- Israel was devastated. They had come under God’s severe discipline because they had loved and worshiped idols.
- Isaiah had been telling them that God remembered them, loved them, and was sending His Servant, the Messiah, to rescue them.
- But they were stuck believing God had not remembered them.
- They accused God of forgetting and forsaking them.
- Honestly, that’s probably what they deserved. So their thinking made sense.
- But God works according to love, not according to what “makes sense.”
God’s Answer (Isaiah 49:15-16)
Here is God’s passionate, loving response:
God asks whether a mother can forget the baby nursing at her breast, or have no compassion on the child she bore. Even if she could forget, He says, I will never forget you. He has engraved us on the palms of His hands, and our walls are always before Him.
- God points to the most loving relationship we can observe on earth: a mother nursing her infant.
- He says His love for you is greater than that.
- It’s hard to even imagine a nursing mother forgetting her child. So it’s impossible that God could forget you.
- Then He goes further: I have engraved you on the palms of My hands.
- In case you needed more proof, God says He has permanently inscribed your name on His palms.
- “Your walls are continually before Me.” He sees your situation. He doesn’t forget it or take it lightly. He’s always thinking about you and your life.
Let’s think carefully about what it means that God has written us on His hands.
Lifted Hands
In Israel, people often prayed with their hands lifted up.
- David said he would bless God as long as he lived and lift up his hands in His name (Psalm 63:4).
- The psalmist calls God’s servants to lift up their hands in the sanctuary and bless the LORD (Psalm 134:2).
Lifted hands are a posture of humility and faith: empty hands, reaching up to receive.
Paul says he wants believers everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or quarreling (1 Timothy 2:8). It’s still a beautiful way to pray.
“Look at My Hands”
Now let’s fix our attention on Jesus.
After His resurrection, Jesus invited doubting Thomas to touch the nail marks in His hands and put his hand into His side, and to stop doubting and believe (John 20:27).
What do I need to believe?
- Jesus loves me.
- Jesus died for me because He loves me.
- Jesus took my sin, and He prays for me!
Do we believe these things?
Hands That Pray for Us
Hebrews says He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them (Hebrews 7:25).
- So when Jesus prays for us, His own hands remind Him of His love for us!
- He sees the wounds that engraved us on Him.
What made those wounds? Nails.
Paul says God canceled the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. He set it aside, nailing it to the cross (Colossians 2:14).
- When Jesus sees His own hands, He’s reminded of His love for us and the price He paid. He cannot forget!
- Jesus let the nails pierce His hands to join us to Himself forever in love.
- He took our sin and bore it on the cross. So when God looks at us, He no longer sees our sin, only His love. No more anger or disappointment. Only love.
- Our failure to meet His requirements has been replaced with His success. Our failure was nailed to the cross.
Into the Father’s Hands
Jesus knows what it’s like to be loved and accepted by the Father.
On the cross He cried out with a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit!” And having said this, He breathed His last (Luke 23:46).
- Jesus knew His Father loved Him, and He trusted that love.
- That love gave Him the endurance to die on the cross for our sins.
- And Jesus invites us into that same love. He says He loves us just as the Father has loved Him (John 15:9).
So Do Not Fear
What does all this mean for us today?
Jesus has not forgotten you. He can never forget you. You’re always right in front of His face.
So do not fear.
Christian rapper Andy Mineo has a song (“Ex Nihilo”) where he reflects that the most beautiful works of art often come out of the ugliest situations. He sings about rejoicing in suffering because God is making a masterpiece, and about not fearing death or Satan, because he knows whose hand his name is engraved on.
John says there is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18).
The hands of Jesus declare His perfect love: enduring, patient, self-sacrificing. He paid a high price to love you; He bought you with His own blood. He is not going to forget you!
You can commit your life into His hands, just as He committed His spirit into His Father’s hands. You can trust Him.
- Thomas could have dwelt on how impossible his situation was: how powerful Rome was, how frightening everything seemed, how sad and alone he felt.
- But Jesus said, “Just look at My hands.”
- And Jesus says the same to you: I’m looking at My hands. I see you there. I see the wounds I bear for you. I see the price I paid. I see My love for you, how much I value you, how I treasure you. I would suffer and die for you, and I did.
Will we believe, or disbelieve? There’s nothing to do to earn this love. You simply receive it, or not.
Grace Takeaway
When you feel forgotten, remember this: God says a nursing mother would sooner forget her baby than He would forget you. Your name is engraved on His palms, carved there by the nails that held Jesus to the cross. He’s always looking at those hands, always praying for you, always remembering the price He paid. You’re not forgotten. You’re held.
