Passage: Psalm 28
The Big Idea
David cries to God, his Rock, lifting his hands toward the sanctuary. Then he blesses God for hearing. The Lord is his strength and shield, and the psalm ends with four promises for God’s people: save, bless, shepherd and carry them forever.
Reflections
To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock (v. 1). Crying out is a big part of grace. It’s humility: earnest, dependent desire. I’ll cry to You, not anyone else. You’re a Rock: solid, unchanging, standing in the storm. I’ll build my house on You. Do not be silent to me: Your voice made everything. I need Your Word of life spoken into me or I’ll go down to the pit. Jesus, fill my soul.
When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary (v. 2). All I have is Your ear. Lifted hands are a humble posture: receiving, waiting, surrendered. And I lift them toward something. That’s faith: hope with a direction, expecting an answer. Toward the sanctuary, the place of Your sacrifice, the place that speaks of all You’ve done for me. That’s where I expect my help.
Do not take me away with the wicked (vv. 3-5). Unlike the wicked, You produce honesty in me. I don’t have to fake it. The whole system of wages and performance belongs to the wicked; the law only condemns. They fall because they do not regard the works of the Lord. The only works the law approves as righteous are what His hands did. If we don’t put our hope in Jesus, we’ll be torn down instead of built up.
Because He has heard my supplications (v. 6). My relationship with God rests on Him hearing me and responding to my cries for help and forgiveness.
The Lord is my strength and my shield (v. 7). By grace, You’re my strength. I don’t have to produce my own. I just get in You. And You’re my shield, protecting me from attacks I can’t foresee. I don’t have to spend my energy worrying about things I’ll never predict. You control it all. My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped.
The Lord is their strength (v. 8). There’s no strength outside the Lord. A living connection with Jesus is required; without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). He Himself lived in humble dependence on the Father. No progress, no growth, apart from relationship with Him.
Save, bless, shepherd, carry (v. 9). Salvation and blessing are realities for God’s children, His inheritance. Four things He does: save His people, bless His inheritance, shepherd them and bear them up forever. He won’t fail or abandon us.
Grace Takeaway
Father, let my heart feast on these promises. Help me let go of every other comfort and trust only You, living like a child in humble dependence. Thank You for Your salvation, blessing, guidance and strength that carries me. Help me walk in them more and more by simple faith.
