Psalm 29: The Voice of the Lord

Passage: Psalm 29

The Big Idea

A thunderstorm rolls across the land, and David hears in it the voice of the Lord: over the waters, breaking cedars, shaking the wilderness. Everything people trust in trembles at His word. Yet this mighty God’s heart is to give strength to His people and bless them with peace.

Reflections

Give unto the Lord glory and strength (vv. 1-2). Will the mighty admit that God alone has glory and strength? Will I surrender these to Him, or look for them in others? His character is so deep and beautiful that I don’t need to look anywhere else for glory or worship anything else. Thank You for convincing my heart.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters (v. 3). We think of waters as powerful; they can wear down mountains. But His voice is over them, as Jesus showed when He calmed the sea. His voice is His Word, and Jesus is the Word. He isn’t silent. He thunders.

The voice of the Lord is powerful (v. 4). Jesus, You’re the source of all power, and there’s royal purpose in everything You do. You never waste time; You’re always on mission. Fill me with Your Word, mission and power.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars (vv. 5-6). People put their hope in mighty trees. You break them easily. I won’t look to people for help or find my security in worldly things. Everything people trust trembles at a word from You. The only safe place is trusting You.

The voice of the Lord divides the flames of fire (vv. 7-9). You do impossible things. You control even what destroys. No one can escape Your voice. You see the most secret and gentle things (the deer giving birth) as well as massive, violent events. In His temple everyone says, “Glory!” His friends see it all and praise Him. None compares to Him.

The Lord sat enthroned at the Flood (v. 10). You judged the world once already, and You’ll always be Judge. You’re never out of control.

The Lord will give strength to His people (v. 11). And here’s His heart: to strengthen His servants and give them peace, though we don’t deserve it. “Give” and “bless” are words of grace: a blessing, not an earned wage. The Lord will bless His people with peace.

Grace Takeaway

The same voice that thunders over the storm speaks peace to His people. Listen for Him today, and let Him give you His strength.
