Psalm 47: God Has Gone Up with a Shout

Passage: Psalm 47

The Big Idea

Psalm 47 calls every nation to clap and shout to God, the great King over all the earth. He has gone up with a shout and the sound of a trumpet, a picture many see fulfilled in Christ’s ascension and return. He chose our inheritance for us, and that inheritance is Jesus. Sing praises with understanding.

Reflections

Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! (v. 1). The fitting response to grace is worship. My hands do many things, but not many of them are worship. Clapping and shouting are physical ways of showing that God is my hope. You have to really believe to do it; it’s a daily test. Shout with the voice of triumph: You don’t fail, You won’t let me down, You’ve already won. Let me believe in Your victory so much that I declare it before I see it.

For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth (v. 2). There’s no comparison. Any moment with You is better than a lifetime with anything else. Nothing is outside Your control. I need to see Your rule, first in my heart, then in my family, my church and the world. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

He will subdue the peoples under us (v. 3). I can’t win battles for hearts and minds. Only prayer and Your power can transform a heart. Unleash that power in my family, Lord, and in everyone I love.

He will choose our inheritance for us, the excellence of Jacob whom He loves (v. 4). God chose Jesus as our inheritance: all we’ll ever need, the fullness and riches of God. He became poor so we could become rich. Jesus is the excellence of Jacob, the reason Israel existed, the Root and Offspring of David. A kingly gift to God’s people.

God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet (v. 5). It sounds like Christ’s ascension and return (Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16). You don’t sit back and watch us suffer. You move with passion and purpose. Hear my cry today, and answer quickly.

Sing praises to God, sing praises! (vv. 6-7). Because You deliver, I’ll sing, before You answer and after. Singing praise is good for me. It’s my joy and purpose. Sing praises with understanding: with my mind engaged, delighting in Your faithfulness.

God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne (v. 8). You’re in charge of everything, so I don’t need to fear. You’ve allowed my trials; I may even deserve them as discipline. But Lord, have mercy now. I repent of what led me here. Hear me from Your throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16).

He is greatly exalted (v. 9). I’m just one of Your children, waiting for You. Be exalted in my life and my family. Someday everything and everyone will praise You as You deserve. I hope it’s soon.

Grace Takeaway

Your inheritance has already been chosen for you, and His name is Jesus. Clap, shout and sing with understanding: the King has gone up, and He’s coming back.
