Psalm 48: Great Is the Lord

Passage: Psalm 48

The Big Idea

Psalm 48 celebrates Zion, the city of God, beautiful and secure because God is in her. Kings came to attack and fled in panic. In Christ, believers are now God’s temple (1 Corinthians 3:16), and the same God dwells in us and defends us. Walk around and consider what He’s done, and tell the next generation.

Reflections

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God (vv. 1-2). I’m now the temple of God. You deserve praise in my heart and life. You’ve made me holy, as the temple was holy. The place You dwell is the best place in the world, and You’ve made me holy? How amazing. I’m undeserving, and I love You.

God is in her palaces; He is known as her refuge (v. 3). You chose Jerusalem for Your name’s sake, and You’ve chosen me. Your love is beyond compare, and I live by drinking it in. You’re pleased to defend me for Your own honor. Put yourself in the Lord’s hands, and He takes responsibility to defend you.

The kings assembled… they were troubled, they hastened away (vv. 4-7). The forces of darkness are against me. They hate me because they hate You. But You’re greater and stronger. I can rest secure, humbly placed under Your protection. You’re in total control. Nothing frightens You. And Your power is on my side!

As we have heard, so we have seen (v. 8). That’s my identity: the dwelling place of God. Your glory isn’t just a story to me. It’s real, my portion every day. I’ve tasted and seen. You’re the God of heaven’s armies, and You’ve taken eternal responsibility for my life.

We have thought, O God, on Your lovingkindness (v. 9). Lord, I want Your love to sink in. Meditate on it. Give it time to take root like a seed. You dwell in my heart. I’m precious to You.

According to Your name, O God, so is Your praise (vv. 10-11). The whole world should know You and praise You. You’re that worthy. I can rejoice because You’ve given me justice I didn’t deserve: a free gift of grace.

Walk about Zion… that you may tell it to the generation following (vv. 12-14). Carefully consider how God has worked in your life. Remember how He built you and protected you, and praise Him. Your children need to know how God blessed you as you trusted Him. This is God, our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death. I love You, God. Teach me to do Your will.

Grace Takeaway

You are the dwelling place of the great King. Take a walk through your own story, count the ways He’s protected you, and tell someone younger what He has done.
