Psalm 61: Lead Me to the Rock That Is Higher Than I

Passage: Psalm 61

The Big Idea

From the ends of the earth, with an overwhelmed heart, David asks to be led to a rock higher than himself. God has been his shelter and strong tower, and he longs to abide in God’s tent forever, under the shelter of His wings.

Reflections

Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer (v. 1). I won’t stop praying. You’re my only hope. I know I pray more when I’m hurting and ignore You when things are fine, and here I am asking for things to be fine. That must seem strange to You. But I’m hurting, and I need Your hand. I can’t promise I’ll be different, but I won’t stop coming to You.

When my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I (v. 2). I’ll cry to You and no other. My heart is truly overwhelmed; I can hardly see straight. Change hearts in a big way. Give new life and a new spirit to those I’m praying for. You’re the Rock higher than I: not something I control, but something I cling to and stand on. I don’t move You; I rest on You.

For You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy (v. 3). Why do I ever leave Your protection? Forgive me and let me back. Even if I lose everything, let me stay with You. This world is hard, and its temptations are strong. Deliver my family by Your power.

I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings (v. 4). Abide. Remain. Live with humility and faith. I need You, want You and trust You. I’ll stay when the storm comes. I’ll keep pressing into relationship with You, seeking Your face and trusting Your sacrifice.

You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name (v. 5). I don’t deserve this. I live in Your inheritance by the new nature You supply by the Spirit. Help me live and be faithful for You.

You will prolong the king’s life… He shall abide before God forever (vv. 6-7). Ultimately this is the eternal King, Jesus. And in Him, abiding in Your presence is what I want, continually. Why would I ever leave? In Your presence is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11). Prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him. Let me live by those two.

So I will sing praise to Your name forever (v. 8). To live as I should, I need Your life in me. I need You as my Savior, Lord, victory and everything. Calm my mind and body.

Grace Takeaway

When your heart is overwhelmed, don’t try to climb higher on your own. Ask Him to lead you to the Rock that is higher than you, and rest there.
