Psalm 62: My Soul Waits Silently for God

Passage: Psalm 62

The Big Idea

“Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation.” While enemies scheme and flatter, David quiets his soul and rests on God alone: his rock, salvation and defense. People are lighter than a breath, and riches can’t be trusted. Power belongs to God, and to You, O Lord, belongs mercy. So trust Him at all times, and pour out your heart before Him.

Reflections

Truly my soul silently waits for God (v. 1). My soul is loud. My mind races, my will resists and my emotions toss back and forth. But when I walk in the Spirit, they can be stilled. When Your salvation is my only hope, I can rest and wait quietly. Silence my soul, not my prayers. My soul wants to self-source; You want to save.

He only is my rock and my salvation (v. 2). Jesus, You’re my Rock. When storms come and waves beat, I stand on You. I may feel the terror of the evil around me, but I’ll just get closer to You, whatever I feel.

How long will you attack a man? (vv. 3-4). Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence, the attackers won’t stand. They bless with their mouths and curse inwardly. I’ve seen this. Teach me to wait on You.

My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him (v. 5). You’re my expectation and my salvation. I expect You to help. I hope in You. I don’t expect anyone else to deliver me. I don’t need any other god.

I shall not be moved (v. 6). Earlier he said, “not greatly moved.” Now: not moved at all. Not like a leaf, but like someone resting on a rock.

In God is my salvation and my glory (v. 7). All glory goes to You. I’ve never been as safe as when I’m with You. I’ll praise You while I wait, and when You answer.

Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him (v. 8). At all times. I’ll pour out my heart like a river. “Pour out” is also used of blood, and crying out to You can feel like pouring out my very life. God is a refuge for us.

Men of low degree are a vapor (v. 9). Weighed on the scales, people are lighter than a breath. Humility needs to be real for me. Apart from You, I have no glory. In Your presence I mean something; on my own, nothing.

If riches increase, do not set your heart on them (v. 10). Oppression, robbery, riches: all things the flesh trusts. I can’t get my way by evil words or works. I’ll trust Your patient, loving ways. Keep my heart pure and focused on You; I don’t even notice when I drift.

Power belongs to God (v. 11). You’re so powerful and so willing to help, with storehouses full. Let me be weak, and You show Yourself strong.

Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy (v. 12). Some days I’ve chosen to trust You, other days not. Flood me with mercy, and fill my cup with Your love.

Grace Takeaway

Quiet your soul. You don’t need to scheme or strive. Wait silently for God alone, pour out your heart before Him, and rest on the Rock that won’t move.
