Psalm 63: Your Lovingkindness Is Better Than Life

Passage: Psalm 63

The Big Idea

In the dry wilderness of Judah, David’s whole being thirsts for God. He remembers seeing God’s power and glory in the sanctuary and declares that God’s lovingkindness is better than life itself. Through the night watches he clings to God, and God’s right hand holds him up.

Reflections

O God, You are my God; early will I seek You (v. 1). You’re the real thing my soul longs for. I’ll drink from Your fountains by opening Your Word. Fill my cup. I have a felt need for You, and only You can satisfy my heart, mind, will and emotions. In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.

I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory (v. 2). Jesus, I know where to find You: in the sanctuary, where I’m reminded of Your covenant, Your sacrifice and blood, Your provision and cleansing, Your voice and Your willingness to meet with me. You’ve shown me Your power and glory before, and I need to see it again, even greater. My insides are mush. Come down and set captives free. Answer me today.

Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You (v. 3). Amen! I need Your touch more than I need to live. Your grace is all I need. I come in humility as Your adopted child. I don’t deserve Your answers; I can only plead with a broken heart. And my lips will praise You whether You answer the way I hope or not. I’ll always stand with You and love You.

I will lift up my hands in Your name (v. 4). A humble, faithful posture: hands open to receive grace. Show me, my family and our church what it means to live from Your hand.

My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness (v. 5). I say this in faith. Help me be joyful in You and know Your deep love. I need Your faithfulness to be my life.

When I remember You on my bed (v. 6). There are many nights I don’t. Be merciful. Give me an undivided heart to seek Your face at all times. There’s never enough of You. Draw me deeper.

In the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice (v. 7). You’ve always proven faithful and helped me. So I’ll trust You again. My heart is often calloused and wicked, yet I press into Your comfort and love.

My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me (v. 8). Like a sheep, I follow close, near enough that Your hand is my support. I lean on You. Jesus, hold me. Don’t let me fall behind. My strength is gone and my heart is broken. I’ll cry until You come.

Those who seek my life… the king shall rejoice in God (vv. 9-11). The enemies will fall, and the king will rejoice. Jesus, I believe Your Word. Lead and guide me today. Speak to my heart, calm the stress and worry, and let me know You’re holding me.

Grace Takeaway

Whatever wilderness you’re in, His lovingkindness is better than life. Seek Him early, follow close, and let His right hand hold you up.
